How to Get HR Consulting Clients: The 5C’s Framework for Fast Growth

By Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD

Published: 7th October 2025

Making the leap from a corporate HR role into consulting is exciting and a little daunting. One of the biggest questions every new consultant asks is:

“How do I get clients quickly, without a big audience or huge ad budget?”

The good news? You don’t need a huge following or a flashy marketing funnel. At Leap into HR Consulting®, we teach new consultants to focus on what actually works and it all starts with a proven model: the 5C’s Framework.

These five steps — Confidence → Clarity → Credibility → Collaboration → Courage are the fastest, most strategic way to go from zero clients to a thriving consultancy.

1️⃣ CONFIDENCE: Step Into Your Expert Voice and Activate Your Network

Your first clients are almost always people who already know, like, and trust you  so start there. Confidence is about showing up as the expert you already are.

Quick wins to boost confidence:

  • Announce your consultancy on LinkedIn. Clearly state who you help and the outcomes you deliver.

  • Reconnect with warm contacts  ex-colleagues, leaders, suppliers and offer a short discovery call.

  • Ask for introductions with a simple, specific request:
“If anyone in your network is struggling with retention, risk, or scale-up HR, please connect us.”

Pro tip: Post weekly insights, quick wins, or mini case studies. Visibility builds trust and trust wins clients.

CLARITY: Define Exactly Who You Help and What You Solve

Lack of clarity is one of the biggest reasons new HR consultancies struggle. When people know precisely what you do and for whom, you become memorable and referable.

💡 Start by answering three key questions:

  1. Who is your ideal client?
    → e.g. UK SMEs with 20–200 employees, tech scale-ups, or family-owned businesses

  2. What problem do you solve?
→ people strategy, retention, risk reduction, manager capability

  3. Why you?
→ unique approach, sector experience, proven results, or values alignment

🎯 Turn this into a clear message:

“I help [WHO] achieve [RESULT] by [METHOD] within [TIMEFRAME].”

This level of clarity helps people understand your value and confidently recommend you.

CREDIBILITY: Package Outcomes and Prove Your Value

Clients don’t buy “HR support.” They buy results. That’s why credibility is all about demonstrating tangible outcomes  not just listing services.

🚀 Create service packages that lead with results:

  • “Reduce HR risk and increase retention in 90 days.”

  • “Build a scalable people plan to support business growth this year.”

📁 Must-have credibility assets:

  • 1–2 short case studies (pilot or pro bono projects count!)

  • Testimonials or LinkedIn recommendations

  • A simple lead magnet (e.g. HR audit checklist or retention guide)

  • A one-page service summary with a clear “Book a Call” CTA

✍️ Bonus: Publish helpful LinkedIn articles, host a 30-minute webinar, or run a live Q&A. Thought leadership builds authority — and authority attracts clients.

COLLABORATION: Build Partnerships to Multiply Your Reach

Warm referrals convert far faster than cold outreach. That’s why collaboration is one of the most powerful client-winning strategies for HR consultants.

🤝 Prime collaboration partners:

  • Accountants or fractional CFOs

  • Marketing or tech agencies serving SMEs

  • Trade associations, Chambers of Commerce, or membership networks

🌐 Ways to collaborate:

  • Co-host a free webinar or clinic

  • Swap referrals with agreed boundaries

  • Deliver a joint workshop for their members or clients

Collaboration shortcuts the trust-building process and can introduce you to dozens of warm leads in just one partnership.

COURAGE: Ask for the Work and Make It Easy to Say “Yes”

Confidence, clarity, and credibility create the opportunities  but courage turns them into clients. That means confidently asking for the sale and removing barriers to a “yes.”

💡 How to lower the risk for first-time clients:

  • Offer a 90-minute strategy review, a 1-day People Plan workshop, or a 3-month pilot retainer.

  • Use tiered proposals (Essential / Enhanced / Embedded) with clear outcomes, timelines, and success metrics.

  • Overcome objections with ROI-focused language and milestone billing options.

📞 Your discovery call checklist:

  1. Explore the client’s goals and constraints

  2. Diagnose the real problem (and demonstrate insight)

  3. Present one clear next step

  4. Ask for the decision and agree the start date

Bringing It All Together

The consultants who gain traction fastest work the 5C’s in order:

  1. Confidence – Show up and activate your warm network

  2. 🎯 Clarity – Define your niche so people can refer you

  3. 📊 Credibility – Prove outcomes and reduce perceived risk

  4. 🤝 Collaboration – Multiply your reach with partners

  5. 💼 Courage – Sell with integrity and momentum
